Timing

This event utilized IPICO timing tags. IPICO timing tags are durable, recyclable tags. No chip = no time. Our timing tags are recyclable; you may keep your tag, return at the finish, or recycle at any Pacers Running Store.
Competition & Awards

With up to $6,400 in total prize money awarded this year, we are once again expecting an excellent field of elite runners. As well, there are medals and merchandise awards for our top age group competitors.

If you wish to apply for elite status in this year's event, please contact our Elite Athlete Coordinator, Marc Davis, no later than April 1, 2010.
BAE Systems also sponsors the General Douglas MacArthur Cup (10 mile only). Team scores are based on the times of the top five active duty runners (minimum one female to score) of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy. The winning service will receive $1000 donation to that service’s relief organization.
Medical

The George Washington Parkway Classic is committed to a safe and healthy event. The race utilizes trained medical volunteers, including orthopedic physicians, emergency physicians and personnel, nurses, chiropractors, and physical therapists. We also utilize emergency services provided by the City of Alexandria.
We would like to thank Ben Kittredge, M.D., our orthopedic medical volunteer coordinator, and volunteers from Commonwealth Orthopaedics. Dr. Kittredge was recently voted a "Top Doctor" by Washingtonian Magazine and is an avid marathoner and athlete. Thank you also to the City of Alexandria EMS, including Brian Hricik, Operations Manager, and Mark Penn, EMS Coordinator, as well as Martin Skopp, D.C., Skopp Chiropractic, our Active Release Technique volunteer coordinator.
Please make yourself familiar with the following procedures:
- Police officers are staged at every intersection and can radio for medical assistance.
- All water station volunteer coordinators are equipped with radios and are able to call in to central command for medical dispatch.
- The City of Alexandria will have bike units, mobile transports, and ambulances staged along the course and at the finish.
- If you have a medical condition, please write this information on the back of your bib. This will assist medical personnel if a situation arises.
- A main medical tent will be situated in Oronoco Bay Park about 200 yards from the finish line. Medical personnel will be wearing identifiable shirts and will be in and around the finish area.
- Listen to your body. If you are not able to complete the event, please stop and have a police officer or volunteer captain (at water stations) call in for transport. A sag bus will also be available to pick up lagging runners.
- Athletes will be transported to Alexandria Hospital (as space allows). Family members can check with the main medical tent which also houses our central communications.
HYDRATION
The George Washington Parkway Classic typically enjoys cool, spring-like temperatures. However, unseasonable conditions are possible. Please take advantage of our water stations located along the course. Heat exhaustion is the most prominent injury among our runners. Listen to your body and take in proper fluids. For more information, please see the ACSM position statement on exercise and fluid replacement.
ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES (ART) TENT
Trained active release technique chiropractors will be available after the event for post-race aches and pains. The massage/ART tent will be located just past the finish line in the park.
ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
For more information, visit www.activerelease.com. Thank you to Martin Skopp, D.C. (Skopp Chiropractic, 1701 Belle View Blvd. A-1, Alexandria, VA 22307 703-721-9600; ironchiro@aol.com) for coordinating our ART volunteers. Dr. Skopp has worked many events, including several marathons and Ironman events. ART is effective both pre-race and post-race; pre/post event appointments are available by contacting Dr. Skopp at 703-721-9600. Appointments are not needed for race day therapy at the park.
